When Wolsey fell out of favor with the King, he gave the palace to the king to check his disgrace. The Palace became one of Henry’s most favored residences. He enlarged the palace so it could accommodate his sizable retinue of courtiers. Work was still underway when Henry’s Second Wife Anne Boleyn was beheaded. Henry’s much desired male heir, the future King Edward VI, was born here, and the child’s mother, Jane Seymour, died there two weeks later. In the early 1690’s King William III massive rebuilding and expansion work, which was intended to rival the Palace of Versailles, destroyed much of the Tudor Palace. This work ceased in 1694, leaving the palace in two distinct contrasting architectural styles, domestic Tudor and Baroque.
