The Rossio Square is the main central square of Lisbon and the true heart of the city. The Portuguese people take pride in their great square! With its nauseating stone paving, grand fountains, statue of Dom Pedro IV and its beautiful neoclassical Donna Maria II Theatre, this is a must visit!
Escorted by your tour guide, you’ll pass the famous Santa Justa Lift, a beautifully crafted elevator that transports passengers from the Baxia district up to the ruins of the Igreja do Carmo church. Next, you’ll walk through Rua Augusta with its hidden ruins and amazing triumphal arch opening up to the famous Comercio Square, Lisbon’s monumental riverside square. This waterfront square is where the royal palace stood until an earthquake destroyed it. As part of the reconstruction of the city after the earthquake, they planned the creation of a new large square, meant to rival Europe’s grandest squares. On one side, the square opens onto the Tagus River while stately government buildings border the other sides.
